How many times have we been told this? That the Second Amendment does not exist for the benefit of hunters, sport shooters or collectors of antique weapons. No, it’s purpose is solely that the American people can rebel against a tyrannical government. The government, so the theory goes, has to live in eternal fear of its armed populace lest one day the mailman comes to ship us all to the local Dachau. (When the Japanese-Americans were deported during World War 2 they wisely decided not to put this theory to the test.)
Well — that’s what motivated Micah J. Surely, there is no office where one goes to check whether the grievances are justified. Did the Colonists get a permit for rebellion from the British king? It does not matter whether the uprising has the backing of many or few or nobody. There need not be a chance of success. Liberty or Death is all there is.
Since we now live in times where this needs to be spelled out explicitly, my sympathies are with the slain officers and their families. But you (and I) live in precisely the America that cherishes its rebellious spirit.
